Summer

8 weeks serving as a summer missionary alongside a Send Boston Church Plant

Love on Boston.

  • In short, you’ll be living as an everyday, Spirit-led missionary in the context of a church plant in our city. The exact details of your week will differ depending on which church plant you are partnered with.

But, in general, here are things you can expect in a typical week.

Sundays: worship and serve with your assigned church plant.

Monday - Friday: you’ll serve alongside your church plant in the following areas:

    1. Evangelism

    2. Compassion ministries (homeless, food insecurity, foster care, trafficking, addiction recovery, etc.)

    3. Planning and leading outreach events

    4. Preparing a missional strategy to engage an unreached area or demographic.

    5. You’ll also participate in bible studies, small groups/missional communities, and have gender and reflection nights.

Thursday afternoon and evening: the entire GenSend team will gather at Tremont Temple for Equip Nights where we’ll eat, sing, pray, worship, share, celebrate, and be challenged through testimonies and sermons.

Saturdays: unless your church plant has an event, the city will be your playground. Explore and fall in love with it!

  • Students arrive around noon on Tuesday, May 28th and depart by noon on Monday, July 22nd.

  • Once accepted into GenSend, there is a non-refundable fee of $1200. Additionally, you are responsible for round-trip transportation to and from Boston. But, once you get to Boston, we provide food, housing, and transportation.

  • You apply through the main GenSend website. When you apply, select Boston as your #1 city preference. Once you have finished your application, GenSend receives your references and runs your background check, your application will be sent to us. We will then reach out to schedule an interview. If we officially accept you, you’ll receive an email where you’ll have to accept on your end.

  • Cohort Participant:
If this is your first summer doing GenSend, this will most likely be your role. You will serve as a summer missionary in a cohort with 6-10 others alongside a church plant.

    Cohort Leader:
Many Gendsenders will return for a second or third summer as cohort leaders. Our goal is to have a male and female leader for each of our cohorts unless we have a single gendered cohort.

    GenSend Boston Leadership Team:
There are three unique roles where students serve alongside the GenSend Directors to serve the larger GenSend Team. Each of these will lead a team to execute their areas of responsibility. Even if you don’t lead, there may be a way for you to use your skills to serve on one of these teams (ex. musicians, singers, photographers, videographers, video editors, etc.).

    1. Worship Leader

    2. Communication Leader (social media, promo videos)

    3. Hospitality Leader (Equip Night Dinners, event planning)

    Ministry Intensive:
Sometimes we are able to craft a ministry intensive underneath the GenSend Summer experience where you serve with a church plant in a specific area (kids, students, college, communications, worship leading). These are almost always reserved for returning students and approved on a case by case basis by the director.

If you are interested in being considered as a cohort leader, one of the three leadership team positions or for a ministry intensive, make a note on your application somewhere and let the directors know when they follow up with you after you apply. You can also contact us here to see if these positions are still available.

  • Most GenSenders will just be a part of a church plant cohort. But, we’ve crafted two specific cohorts that might interest you:

    Worship Leader Cohort:
This cohort is designed to help develop the next wave of worship leaders in Boston. In addition to being a part of the day to day activities of your church plant cohort, you will complete 1 hour of online equipping on your own and meet once a week. These weekly meeting will include:

    1. Review the online modules for development and growth.

    2. Participate in weekly interviews with worship leaders across Greater Boston.

    3. Help plan, participate in and/or execute GenSend Equip Nights.

    4. Receive coaching on leading a worship team and planning/executing Sunday worship sets.

    Faith and Work Cohort:
This cohort is designed for students who need a full-time internship in their field of study (accounting, nursing, business etc.) and desires to live as an everyday Spirit-led missionary in the workplace. You will be a part of this cohort instead of a church plant cohort. It will be your responsibility to find an internship, but we are here to help you in anyway we are able to. We have resources and connections that may be of help in this process (explore work internships here). Once you get to Boston, we ask that you commit to serving faithfully with a church plant (probably one where we have a GenSend team) and to being a part of the weekly Faith and Work cohort meetings. There will be some online equipping and a weekly meeting with other businessmen and women in our city to learn how to live as a workplace missionary.

If you are interested in either of these cohorts, let the directors know during your interview. You can also contact us here to discuss anything related to either of these cohorts.
